Some guys have all the luck. Meet Marcel, whose job as the GM of the super-chic Upper House in Hong Kong may make many of us very envious. Here are some of his insights into great times in Honkers, whatever the weather.

What’s the X factor of your business?

The Upper House is renowned for its incredibly personalised service; it really comes down to the daily interaction we have with our guests, and it’s the thing we enjoy the most.

The most memorable moment spent at work?

We are blessed to have a very diverse, sophisticated and interesting clientele from around the world. The hotel is always abuzz, and I enjoy being in the lobby to greet the guests and learn their story. The little moments I have with each and every one of them are memorable in themselves.

If you have a day off with nothing planned, where would you go near you? To do what?

I like to spend my downtime in a gym, and I try to work out twice during the weekend. I love to go shopping in Pacific Place because it’s very convenient, being right next to the hotel, and has a great selection of stores. My favourite store at the moment is JOYCE boutique, and I spend my time at the Above and Beyond Lounge, where I recently became a member. My favourite restaurants at the moment would have to be Sushi Shikon, Gough’s on Gough and Uma Nota.

What’s the newest/hippest attraction near you?

The Starstreet precinct is a great pleasure to walk around; there’s always a wide array of new restaurants, and it’s easy to get there. I also like Sheung Wan because it has many little stores and great restaurants, such as Frantzen’s Kitchen, Chộm Chộm and Yardbird.

Tell us about the coolest place to spend a few hours near you and why?

My favourite hairdresser is Il Colpo in Pacific Place – it’s sophisticated, efficient and the team is very professional. I also like the new PURE gym and running on Bowen Road, which is like a jungle within the city. Elephant Grounds in Starstreet has fun food and delicious coffee that keeps me coming back for more, day after day.
